Actus was contacted by a company who manufactures custom controls for remote operation of heavy duty equipment. Their clients presented them with the problem of remote controlling a small excavator by controlling some of the extensions.

The problem they were facing was not being able to find hydraulic valves that were electrical, proportional, and would fit onto the machine.

The 722 Series ERC was found to be the best solution for their project. After receiving and mounting the actuators, they controlled them with their own radio remote control system which were able to directly interface to the actuators.

We checked in with them after a few months had past. “The actuators are working, they are an absolute treat! Our client is very happy. Thanks!”

In this application a John Deere electronic (Tier 4) diesel engines and is used to do manure injection into a farmer's field. The actuator is incorporate into an assembly that allows the operator to easily set and adjust an upper engine RMP limit without going into the actuator itself. Then thru a tractor mounted radio, he can increase/decrease engine speed to control the manure injection from across the field. The actuator's slow movement permits a controlled engine speed change eliminating a condition called "water hammer". Their dealers then adds hydraulic and manure pumps, radio control unit and a trailer.

One of the interesting applications we've been involved with involves 1:8 scale train locomotives. Many years ago we partnered with a small company that needed a way to control their train locomotive throttle. They decided to use our 723 Series ERC actuator with our proportional controller and an analog input. Because safety was of the utmost concern, in the event of a failure are able to disengage the clutch and have a spring centering mechanism brings the train to a stop.

The trainmaster locomotive pictured above from one of their customers and is 22 inches high, 16 inches wide and 9 feet long... and yes, you can ride them!

About a month ago we got a call from a Fastenal branch, which buys various rubber latches from us, and they had a problem. One of their customers is a global company which along with having domestic facilities also has a production facility in Australia. With the recent flooding this year in Australia, it caused their Australian facility to close and move all their production to this particular plant here in the United States.

With this factory going live with this product line one of the problems was sourcing all of the parts, one of which is a rubber piece, which is where Actus came in.

We received a drawing of what they were looking for and after a little back and forth we cut our engineers loose. We quickly machined up some tooling, ordered material and cranked out the 100 piece requirement.

Three weeks after the first phone call conversation parts were shipped and the customer was happy.

In total for this project we created a new PCB, a new third position switch, a new mounting plate, and adapted a new style pull cable.

We got a call from a potential customer who had a little bit of experience using our 720 series product. What they wanted was to take their own proprietary controller and adapt it to drive our 720 series actuator, allowing for very accurate positioning control along with various I/O capabilities. One of the issues we faced is with the standard feedback POT, which was never designed for .010” accuracy, so we needed another solution. We ended up taking our Actus designed feedback POT out of our ERC series actuators, and with some engineering modifications, were able to integrate it into the 720 series actuator. Once the new design was complete the 720-0191 actuator was created.
